Older lady amazed at the AI generated images on a computer screen

Maybe It’s Time to Stop Watching AI… and Start Playing With It

May 18, 20262 min read

The other evening my wife was scrolling through Facebook when one of those adorable AI-generated animal videos popped up.

You’ve probably seen them.

A baby otter holding a tiny heart-shaped rock.
A golden retriever baking cookies.
A raccoon driving a pickup truck for absolutely no reason.

The internet has become a very strange place.

She smiled and said:

“Whoever made that is really talented.”

And that’s when it hit me.

A lot of people my age still thinks AI images are created somewhere inside a giant Hollywood animation studio by teams of digital artists working around the clock.

Meanwhile, I’m over here typing things like:

“Create a cowboy raccoon drinking coffee at sunrise.”

And thirty seconds later…
there he is.

Living his best life.

What surprises me most is not the technology itself.

It’s how many people have never even tried it.

Not once.

Not a birthday card.
Not a funny picture for the grandkids.
Not a goofy family joke.
Not even “a cat wearing sunglasses driving a tractor.”

Which honestly feels like a missed opportunity.

Because one of the best ways to stop being intimidated by AI…
is simply to play with it.

Not build a business system.

Not automate your life.

Just experiment.

Ask it for:

  • a funny image

  • a custom birthday card

  • a fishing trip poster

  • a dream vacation scene

  • your dog dressed like a movie star

  • or yourself as a 1970s action hero

Trust me…
that last one can be emotionally dangerous.

The funny thing is, many people my age approach AI like it’s some mysterious piece of advanced military equipment.

Meanwhile teenagers are using it to make frogs sing country music.

And honestly?
The teenagers may have the healthier approach.

Because curiosity is usually a much better teacher than fear.

I think many older adults believe there’s some kind of “technology entrance exam” before they’re allowed to try AI.

There isn’t.

You don’t need:

  • coding skills

  • technical knowledge

  • special training

  • or a Silicon Valley vocabulary

You just need enough curiosity to type:

“Show me something fun.”

That’s it.

And maybe that’s the real doorway into understanding AI.

Not complicated tutorials.

Not scary headlines.

Not debates about the future of civilization.

Just ordinary people realizing:

“Wait… I can actually use this?”

Because once someone creates their first funny image…
or personalized birthday card…
or ridiculous family joke…

AI suddenly stops feeling like techno magic.

It starts feeling like a tool.

And maybe even a creative one.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I apparently need to generate an image of a baby otter riding a lawn mower because somehow that idea just entered my brain and refuses to leave.

One practical step at a time.
